Today is election day and while I don't have any election returns to rejoice over, I do have the following list of ten things that will always be true no matter who wins the elections.
Back in October 2020, I sent this meme to my atheist brother. Of course he missed the point. His comment was, "Looks like Terry is predicting a loss for his side." Over the years, he has replaced God with politics. He called it "a cartoon, full of mindless platitudes."
The point is that whoever wins the election there are 10 things that will always be true about God. Those are true if a Republican wins or a Democrat wins. They are true all of the time. No matter who any of our elected representatives are.
Not every thing is about politics as he wants to make it. But for someone who doesn't believe in God, maybe I'm putting the cart before the horse, some things are more important than politics. That's the point that I was hoping he would get from it. God is more important than politics. My hope was that he would learn something about God. But he didn't.
That same week Fr. Trevor Buster from my parish gave a fantastic homily...
He talks about the non negotiable issues of abortion and same sex marriage. He tells us that worship to God demands a public witness to our faith. The world does not end on November 3rd. The demand of the public witness of our faith is not binding only in election season. It is binding all of the time. He finishes up by calling us to let the world know about the rights of God.
That's the message that I wanted my brother to get that he failed to grasp but is still a great election day message for all of us. Dont "let the elephant or the donkey get in the way of our identity as a child of the lamb."
